With Apple due to release four models this year – a step up from the three models they’ve been releasing for the past few years – there’s one question that will be burning on many people’s lips: what will be the difference between these four iPhone 12 models?
At present, the four iPhone 12 phones are rumored to be called: iPhone 12mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The 12mini and the 12 will be the affordable options, while the 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max are set to be more expensive with high end features.
While we don’t have any official specs as of yet, there has been a steady flow of leaks and rumors regarding the new iPhone 12 family for months now. See below to find out what we’re expecting from these new phones – and which one will be best for you…
The iPhone 12mini is rumored to be the entry-level iPhone 12 model, featuring slightly less exciting specs than some of the higher-end versions and a much more affordable price (it looks set to be almost half the price of the iPhone 12 Pro Max!). It’s set to come with three storage options, including 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, priced at $649, $699 and $799 respectively. It is also rumored to measure just 5.4″.
Similarly to the iPhone XR and the base iPhone 11, the iPhone 12mini will have plenty of exciting color options, including Black, White, Blue, Red, Yellow and Coral.
There hasn’t been much information leaked on how the core specs between the four iPhone 12 models will differ. However, we’re fairly certain that there will be two different versions of 5G between the four phones. The iPhone 12mini will have the slower (yet reportedly more reliable) sub-6GHz 5G, which should still be an improvement on 4G speeds, but won’t quite have the impressive zippiness of mmWave 5G.
The iPhone 12 looks set to be the base iPhone 12 model, featuring similar specs to the iPhone 12mini. However, the iPhone 12 is rumored to be larger than the iPhone 12mini, measuring in at 6.1″ compared to the 12mini’s diminutive 5.4″. It’s not clear whether there will be any further significant differences between the two phones (such as an additional camera or a different type of screen).
The iPhone 12 will also come in 64/128/256GB variants, costing $749, $799 and $899 respectively. We’ve also heard that the iPhone 12 will also be running sub-6GHz 5G and will come with a rear dual-camera unit.
iPhone 12 Pro
Rumored to be the same size as the iPhone 12 (6.1″), the iPhone 12 Pro is the first of the two high-end iPhone 12 models. While the two affordable models are set to come in a range of six different colors, the Pro and the Pro Max will apparently be limited to black, white and silver.
We’ve also heard that the iPhone 12 Pro will eschew a 64GB storage version, instead focusing on giving users beefier storage options with 128/256/512GB variants. These will apparently be priced at $999, $1,099 and $1,299 respectively.
Information on the iPhone 12 cameras (and the differences between each model) isn’t quite as clear as we’d like it to be, so while the following information seems pretty sensible, you might want to take it with a pinch of salt. However, apparently the higher-end iPhone 12 models could be featuring an improved telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom (compared with the iPhone 11’s 2x optical zoom). Apparently the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will also be featuring triple camera units, compared with the 12mini and 12’s dual-lens cameras.
iPhone 12 Pro Max
The iPhone 12 Pro Max will be the most expensive model in the iPhone 12 line-up, offering the same 128/256/512GB storage options as the iPhone 12 Pro for $1,099, $1,199 and $1,399 respectively. However, it looks as though users will get far more than just some extra storage space with the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Apparently, in addition to featuring the same 3x optical zoom telephoto lens as the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max could also use a new time-of-flight camera that will essentially mean that the Pro Max will have a 3D camera. This will mean that the phone will be able to create detailed understanding of a scene for an improved augmented reality experience.
In terms of video, the iPhone 12 Pro Max (and possibly the iPhone 12 Pro as well) will apparently be able to shoot 4K video at 120fps and 240fps.
