A CCTV camera and a resident with a mobile phone captured ram raiders attempting to force entry to the Go Local Extra store on Imperial Crescent, Town Moor, in the early hours of Saturday, October 3.
A van was repeatedly reversed into the front of the shop, causing severe damage, but the raiders fled empty handed.
They were confronted by the owner of the store, who lives above the shop.
He shouted at the men from an upstairs window and was racially abused.
The van used in the raid was driven away from the shop and a silver Renault Clio was used as a getaway car for the others involved.
South Yorkshire Police said: “Police received a call at 4.41am on Saturday, October 3 with reports of a burglary in progress at Go Local on Imperial Crescent.
“It is reported that a white van reversed up to the shop and repeatedly reversed into the front windows before leaving the scene.
“It is also reported the occupants of the vehicle shouted racial abuse at those inside the shop.
“A second vehicle, a silver Clio, was also reported to have left with the van.
“No-one was injured in the incident and enquiries are ongoing, no arrests have been made.”
Posting on Facebook, Riya Sethi, whose family own the shop, said: “The level of damage occurred is unimaginable.
“Myself and my family live above the shop, so not only was this an invasion of our shop but our home too.
“This was such a terrifying and heartbreaking experience.”
